Ceruletide (Caerulein) is a bioactive peptide isolated from the skin of Australian frogs, an effective gallbladder constrictor, and an agonist of the cholecystokinin receptor.

Ceruletide is a decapeptide and an effective agonist of cholecystokinin receptor. Ceruletide is a safe and effective gallbladder constrictor with direct spasmodic effects on the gallbladder muscles and bile ducts.

Biological activity:

Ceruletide is chemically and biologically similar to human gastrointestinal hormones cholecystokinin pancreatin (CCK) and gastrin II. Ceruletide stimulates gallbladder contraction, pancreatic exocrine secretion, gastric secretion, and movement of the distal duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and colon, while delaying gastric emptying and inhibiting proximal duodenal movement.

Ultra high doses of Ceruletide activate NF kappaB/Rel in vitro. This activation may induce a genetic program of self-defense before cell damage begins, which may prevent higher degrees of damage to pancreatic acinar cells after excessive stimulation by secretagogues.
